Ramon Ortiz Fornaguera Collection
Personal collection of Ramón Ortiz Fornaguera (1916–1974), physicist and mathematician trained at the University of Barcelona, who worked at the Nuclear Energy Board. His professional career is essential for understanding university physics during the early Franco regime and the development of nuclear sciences under the dictatorship.
Collection description: The collection consists of documents loaned for digitisation by Teresa Ortiz, daughter of Ramón Ortiz, with the mediation of researchers Pablo Soler, Gonzalo Gimeno, and Mercè Xipell, who have scanned and produced an initial catalogue of this material. The documents include Ortiz's correspondence (298 items) and 83 documents related to his education and professional activities. The collection also includes the majority of Ortiz’s published works and some manuscripts connected to these works (48 items).
Some of these documents were used in Gonzalo Gimeno’s doctoral thesis, La matemática de los quanta en España (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2015). For further details, see Gonzalo Gimeno, Pablo Soler, and Mercè Xipell, Descripción del Archivo Ramón Ortiz Fornaguera, Actes d'Història de la Ciència i de la Tècnica, 6 (2014), 117–28.
In addition to the aforementioned researchers, Mireia Bachs and Rosa Pujol (Biblioteca de Ciència i Tecnologia, UAB) contributed to the classification and editing of the records for their incorporation into the DDD. Other collaborators include Carlos Acosta (Science Archives Service and Centre for the History of Science, CEHIC, UAB) and Miquel Carandell (CEHIC, UAB). This project has received support from the Science Archives Service and the HAR2011-27308 project Physics, Culture and Politics in Spain, funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation.
