Professor Aline Concha from the Department of Geology at UAB curates this exhibition, highlighting the close relationship between geology, modern geodesy, and geophysics with one of the most fascinating episodes in the history of science.

The cry “We want to know! We want to know!” has moved the world since the 17th century, with the great explosion of scientific and philosophical thought. Great thinkers from France, England and Germany renewed science, the arts and literature, when the differences between them were not yet defined. At this time of intellectual fervor, schools of thought were formed at a national level where defending one or another position also represented defending the pride of the homeland.

And the well-known discussion between Newton and Descartes regarding the “Figure of the Earth” is a clear historical exponent of the great colonial powers’ eagerness for exploration.  Professor Aline Concha’s exhibition narrates the historical facts and highlights how the Earth sciences are the true heirs of these facts.

Today, scientists no longer need to participate in large expeditions. The current and sophisticated satellite tools make it possible to carry out more accurate observations of the Earth that never cease to surprise us. Hence, we can still continue to cry out: “We want to know! We want to know!”, but adding a protesting cry: “We want to protect and we want to preserve this planet!”.

Until April 11, you can visit the exhibition at the Science and Technology Library.

We look forward to seeing you there!
