The UAB Library Service was awarded recognition by the University "for its commitment to defending the rights of women" as part of the 20th institutional event held in commemoration of International Women's Day, which took place on 10 March at the Rectorat building.

Gender Equality Recognition Event

The director of the Library Service, Núria Casaldàliga, took the floor to give thanks for the award, which she called a “choral recognition for all the people who are part of the UAB libraries”, and to congratulate the libraries for the many activities carried out in the last twenty years “to make women and gender issues visible, as well as for the respect for diversity”. Among them, she mentioned a multitude of exhibitions such as the one that currently pays tribute to the eighteen women who have been named honorary doctors by the UAB.

In his speech, Rector Javier Lafuente joined in the recognition of the Library Service saying that “it is a source of pride” to have the “high professionalism and quality of a service committed to the visibility of women in academia". According to Lafuente, the UAB “reaffirms every day its commitment to the defense of women's rights and we are a pioneering university in this area.” He highlighted milestones such as the successive UAB equality plans and dedicated special words of thanks to Professor Maria Prats as director of the Observatory for Equality over the past few years.

The day also included a presentation of the University's gender equality policies by Esther Zapater, secretary general of the UAB, who recalled that “we must claim that actions must be carried out 365 days a year”, and a talk on the role of libraries, librarianship and information science in the construction of a more egalitarian society that was given by Núria Ferran, delegate of the rector for the direction of the Equality Unit of the UB.

In addition to the institutional day, the commemoration of 8 March at the UAB includes a series of activities organised by the centres, services and groups of the university community that will continue to develop throughout this week.
