Jordi Bigues Collection
Collection of Jordi Bigues i Balcells, journalist and activist born in Barcelona in 1954. As a member of the Board of Directors of Greenpeace España, he coordinated the campaign in support of the residents of Palomares (Almería) in the mid-1980s, at a time when the deadline for compensation to the victims of the nuclear accident of 17 January 1966 was imminent.
Collection description: In 2016, Jordi Bigues donated his personal archive on the accident to the Centre for the History of Science at the UAB, now known as the Institute for the History of Science. The collection contains a wide range of documents, both personal and official: handwritten notes from meetings, press clippings, correspondence from various senders and recipients, official reports, documentary projects, as well as scientific articles, books, and publications. Prior to its publication in the UAB Digital Document Repository, this unique archive has already contributed to new research on the accident, such as Clara Florensa's "James Bond, Pepsi-Cola and the Palomares Nuclear Accident (1966)" in L. Camprubí, X. Roqué and F. Sáez, eds., From the Cold War to Global Warming: United States, Spain, and the New World Scientific Order (Madrid: Los Libros de La Catarata, 2018), pp. 17–38. The collection has also been featured in several documentaries.
On behalf of the Institute for the History of Science, Xavier Roqué, member of the IHC and Professor in the Department of Philosophy, managed the donation. In 2017, the archive was catalogued and digitised at the Institute, with the collaboration of David Conejo, a student of the Degree in Physics at the UAB. The staff of the Library Service and the Science and Technology Library, particularly Anna Florensa, Marta Galán, and F. Xavier Beltrán, also contributed to the cataloguing and preparation of the collection for publication in the UAB Digital Depository of Documents.
