Historical Veterinary Journals Collection

A specialised collection aimed at supporting the study and research of veterinary history in Catalonia and Spain through the most significant periodicals from the 19th and 20th centuries. Key titles include Revista Veterinaria de España (1907–1936), preceded by Revista Pasteur (1906–1907), and Revista de Higiene y Sanidad Veterinarias (1911–1917), which was followed by Revista de Higiene y Sanidad Pecuarias (1917–1936). These journals were pivotal in the scientific consolidation of the veterinary profession in Spain, with contributions from figures such as Josep Farreras and Félix Gordón.

Other notable publications from the late 19th century include The Zookeryx, or the Crier of the Animals (1876–1880), El Naturalista: Illustrated Magazine of Natural History, Animal Husbandry, Agriculture, and Sport (1886–1891), and El Albéitar: Scientific Journal and Defender of the Moral and Material Interests of Albeiteria Teachers (1853–1855), the first professional veterinary magazine published in Catalonia. In the field of agricultural sciences, Agricultura: Catalan Agricultural Magazine (1917–1927), later followed by Agricultura i Ramaderia (1928–1936), is a key resource.

The scientific and educational work of Salvador Castelló is also significant, particularly through the Real Escuela Oficial de Avicultura de Arenys de Mar and its official publications: La Avicultura Práctica: Boletín Mensual Ilustrado (1896–1919), later succeeded by Mundo Avícola: Illustrated Monthly Magazine of World Poultry Information and Culture (1922–1936).

Collection description: This collection gathers periodicals of historical significance in veterinary science, animal husbandry, medicine, agriculture, and other related fields. It includes a total of 20 periodical titles in print and/or digital formats, compiled with the expertise of the Catalan Veterinary History Association. The digitalisation of this collection was made possible through the support of the Council of Veterinary Associations of Catalonia (CCVC), timely funding from the Ministry of Culture’s calls for digital preservation, and collaborations with institutions such as the Veterinary Faculty of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Universidad de Zaragoza, the College of Veterinarians of Girona, the Municipal History Archive of Barcelona and the Official Poultry School of Arenys de Mar.
