Lynx Edicions
Lynx Edicions is a publishing house specialising in ornithology and natural history books, co-founded by Jordi Sargatal i Vicens and Josep del Hoyo Calduch. It is renowned for the Handbook of the Birds of the World (17 volumes), the first work to describe and illustrate every bird species globally, as well as the Handbook of the Mammals of the World (9 volumes). Lynx publishes a wide range of nature books, including encyclopaedias, checklists, field guides, and monographs.
In 2013, following the completion of the collection, HBW Alive was created, an online version of the Handbook of the Birds of the World, which incorporated numerous additional resources and continuous updates. In 2020, HBW Alive was merged into the Birds of the World online project by The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, where it continues to grow and serve the global ornithological and birdwatching community.
In addition to these important projects, Lynx continues to expand its portfolio of ornithology and natural history titles, including field guides, nature guides, monographs, and illustrated checklists. One expanding project is the Lynx and BirdLife International Field Guide Collection, which aims to produce modern, standardised identification guides, particularly for countries that lack recent or national-level guides. There is also a growing number of titles in the Lynx Illustrated Checklists series, covering all mammal species in specific regions.
Lynx remains committed to these projects as they represent key resources for the training and education of professionals and enthusiasts, including researchers, guides, and bird/mammal watchers. These efforts also have significant implications for the conservation of nature and biodiversity at both local and global levels.
The Lynx Collection, primarily focused on bird books, is housed in the Science and Technology Library.
