The Farreras Family Collection

Family lineage of several generations with important contributions in the field of veterinary medicine and medicine. In the field of veterinary medicine there are three outstanding figures, Josep, Francisco and Pere Farreras Sampera.

Josep Farreras i Sampera (El Masnou, 1880 — El Masnou, 1914) and Pere Farreras i Sampera (El Masnou, Maresme, 1876 — Barcelona, 1955) founded Revista Pasteur in 1906, which was renamed Revista Veterinaria de España a year later (1907-1936). This publication became a benchmark for veterinary medicine at the time, gaining international recognition, including a gold medal at the 1908 Spanish-French exhibition. After Josep's death, Francisco Farreras i Sampera, a lawyer known for his writings on veterinary jurisprudence, took over the magazine's administration and editorial responsibilities, while Pere Farreras became its editor-in-chief.

The Farreras family's influence expanded in 1912 with the creation of the Library of the Revista Veterinaria de España. From this publishing house, Pere Farreras translated major European veterinary works, primarily from German, including key texts such as Pathología y Terapéutica Especiales de los Animales Domésticos by Franz Hutyra and Josef Marek, and Compendio de Patología y Terapéutica Veterinaria by E. Fröhner and G. Zwick. Notably, they were pioneers in translating the renowned Practical Manual of Internal Medicine by Dr. Domarus.

The Farreras family's remarkable contribution to the development of health sciences in Spain is underscored by their publications and the significant translations of medical and veterinary literature.

Collection description: The collection includes documentation related to the commercial activities of Revista Veterinaria de España, along with personal and professional documents of Josep, Pere, and Francisco Farreras i Sampera. It also incorporates part of the family library. The collection consists of 1,028 documents dating from 1841 to 1970, spread across five boxes and 96 volumes. The latest documentation, received in 2016, is yet to be inventoried and catalogued.
