Banco Urquijo Collection
Banco Urquijo was established in Madrid in 1870 as a collective society under the name Banco de Urquijo, Ortueta y Arenzana, founded by Juan Manuel Urquijo Urrutia. Within a few years, it became one of the most emblematic institutions in Spain.
In 1965, the bank expanded to Barcelona, where it set up a Research Service led by Ramon Trias i Fargas, becoming the first industrial bank in Spain.
It played a significant role in various leading industries, including Compañía Hispanoamericana de Electricidad, Maquinista Terrestre y Marítima de Barcelona, Catalana de Gas y Electricidad, Hidroelèctrica de Catalunya, SEAT, Sociedad Española de Construcción Naval, and Unión Eléctrica Madrileña, among others.
In 1982, Urquijo became part of Banco Hispano Americano, which later merged with Bankunión to form Banco Urquijo-Unión. Eventually, it came under the control of Banca March and was acquired by Banco de Sabadell in 2006.
