Antoni Lloret Collection
Personal collection of Antoni Lloret i Orriols, a Catalan physicist active in high-energy physics, solid-state physics, and photovoltaic power generation. Born in Barcelona in 1935, Lloret studied Physics at the University of Barcelona and earned a doctorate from both the University of Barcelona and Paris-Sorbonne. He spent part of his career in France as a member of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). In Catalonia, he has collaborated with the Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Barcelona and has served as a professor and researcher at the university's Parc Científic. He has also acted as an independent expert in nuclear safety for the Executive Council of the Generalitat de Catalunya and has been a strong advocate for the development of photovoltaic energy. A corresponding member of the Institute of Catalan Studies, his scientific contributions have been recognised with the Narcís Monturiol Medal (2004) and the Creu de Sant Jordi (2008).
In addition to numerous scientific articles, Lloret has authored several science books and novels, including Dictionnaire de l'Atome (co-authored with P. Musset, Larousse, 1964; translated into English and published by Collins in 1968), Diccionari de Ciència i Tecnologia Nuclears (Edicions 62, 1978), Micmac (co-authored with Jaume Fuster, Edicions de La Magrana, 1993), and El Café Metropol (Edicions de La Magrana, 1999). His latest published novel is Max i Odile, raó i passió (Pagès, 2015).
Collection description: The collection consists of documents transferred to the UAB through the mediation of Xavier Roqué (Institut for the History of Science and Department of Philosophy, UAB). These documents are dated between 1968 and 1970, a period when Lloret directed the Experimental High Energy Group of the Spanish Nuclear Energy Board. They relate to Spain's first stage at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research), and include press kits prepared by the Nuclear Energy Board during Spain's negotiations for continued participation in the organisation. Some of these documents have been referenced in various publications, including X. Roqué's "España en el CERN (1961–1969), o el fracaso de la física autárquica", featured in N. Herran and X. Roqué, eds. La Física en la dictadura. Físicos, cultura y poder en España, 1939–1975 (Servei de Publicacions de la UAB, 2012), pp. 239–258; and X. Roqué's "Cultures of Research and the International Relations of Physics Through Francoism: Spain at CERN", in B. Balmer, A. F Canales and A. Gómez, eds. Science Policies and Twentieth-Century Dictatorships: Spain, Italy and Argentina (Ashgate, 2015), pp. 121–140.
Alongside the aforementioned researcher, we acknowledge the contributions of Mireia Bachs and Rosa Pujol (Science and Technology Library, UAB); and Carlos Acosta (Servei d'Arxius de Ciència and Institut for the History of Science, CEHIC, UAB). This work has been supported by the Servei d'Arxius de Ciència and by research project HAR2011-27308 Physics, Culture and Politics in Spain (Ministerio de Cultura e Innovación).
