Andrés de Haro Collection
Andrés de Haro Vera was born on 27 December 1925 in Mazarrón, Murcia, and passed away on 11 September 2006 in Terrassa. He graduated in Biological Sciences from the University of Barcelona in 1958, and in 1962 he obtained his doctorate with a thesis on testicardine branchiopods. From 1965, he served as a professor of Zoology (Arthropods) at the University of Salamanca. In 1970, he moved to the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, where he continued as a professor of Zoology (Arthropods) and taught the first cohort of biologists at the university.
His research focused on branchiopods, pycnogonids, oligochaetes, and particularly formicids (ants). A significant portion of his 50 published works in national and international journals was dedicated to ants. He supervised 13 doctoral theses and named a species of ant, Cataglyphis gadeai, in honour of his thesis supervisor, Dr. Enrique Gadea Buisán. He was a member of several scientific organisations.
Dr. de Haro was passionate about phylogeny, ethology, and evolution, and he organised international congresses on the first two topics. In 1983, he published Introducción a la etología, the first textbook on this subject in Spain.
The donation of his collection to the Science and Technology Library was facilitated by Dr. Tomàs Munilla from the Department of Animal Biology, Plant Biology, and Ecology at UAB.
