Following the 5th edition of what is known as the bible of bird ringers, the Identification Guide to European Passerines, by Lars Svensson, which was published in English in 2023, the Spanish translation of the well-known guide, edited by the Spanish Society of Ornithology, is presented.
This is a leading manual for the study of passerines in hand, which offers details of wing structures, biometrics, molting strategies, and other aspects that allow the identification of the species, subspecies, age and sex of European passerines. Its original publication, in the 1970s, was made with the intention of providing a small guide to ringers and specialists in natural history museums, to be able to separate those taxa that present the most difficulties. Its rapid acceptance generated new editions, making the guide a standard for all European ornithologists.
To present the translation and adaptation into Spanish, which will be released in March 2025, an online conversation will be held between the following specialists:
-José Luis Copete, editorial and identification consultant on the Handbook of Western Palearctic Birds.
-Arantza Leal (SEO/BirdLife)
-Eulalia Moreno, Spanish translator of the previous edition (1996)
-Alfonso Villarán, director of the Centro de Migración de Aves
