On January 30 and 31, 2025, the researchers from the Department of Geography Anna Badia, Carme Miralles, Oriol Nel·lo, Albert Pèlachs, and David Saurí participated in the 1st Expert Conference: Climate Change and Territory in the Iberian Mediterranean. Scientific evidence, effects, strategies, and recommendations, held at the Aula Magna of the La Nau Cultural Center of the University of Valencia.

During two days, professionals from various disciplines analyzed the impact of climate change on aspects such as the intensification of the hydrological cycle, desertification, forest fires, tourism, agriculture, mobility, and water resource management.

Among the interventions by members of the Department of Geography, Oriol Nel·lo addressed land use and urban planning, while Carme Miralles participated in the debate on infrastructure, transport, and mobility. Albert Pèlachs spoke about agriculture and rural ecosystems, and David Saurí contributed to the panel on water resource management. Anna Badia, for her part, shared her knowledge in the session dedicated to forest fires and the evolution of forested areas.

One of the most relevant topics discussed at the conference was the impact of Isolated High-Level Depressions (DANA). Experts warned that although these phenomena may not necessarily become more frequent, they could be more destructive due to the increase in population and inadequate land management.

Additionally, the need for a "Marshall Plan" for the Valencian Community after the recent natural disasters was emphasized, which would include significant investment for reconstruction and better coordination between administrations.

The event was attended by a large number of academics and researchers, as well as supported by the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities and the Department of Education, Culture, Universities, and Employment. The conference was streamed online via TV.UV.ES.
