Dialogue between Helena Cruz and Oriol Nel·lo at the Opening Ceremony of the 2024/25 Academic Year of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities
On Tuesday, October 15, the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities held the opening ceremony for the 2024/25 academic year with a dialogue between Helena Cruz and Oriol Nel·lo on the topic "Territorial Planning: A Tool for Environmental Sustainability and Social Justice."
In this dialogue, which lasted just over half an hour, Helena Cruz, who studied a degree in Geography at the Faculty and is a specialist in spatial planning and urban planning, shared her motivations for choosing a degree in Geography and her subsequent specialisation, as well as her professional experiences, such as the ‘Special urban development plan to regulate the conditions for the establishment of wind farms in the municipality of La Jonquera’, awarded the 14th Catalonia Prize for Urban Planning Manuel de Solà Morales 2023, or the Barcelona Neighbourhood Plan as an example of spatial planning to achieve social equity.
These two examples highlighted the importance of geography and its method, or in the words of Professor Oriol Nel·lo ‘the steps of the trade’, in the transformation of the territory and in the advancement of public policies, and also underlined the need to manage these transformations.
The event was chaired by the Rector Javier Lafuente and the Dean of the Faculty, Margarita Freixas, and was also attended by Professor Joan Carles Llurdés Coit, Vice-Dean of Inclusion, Economy and Spaces / Secretary of the Faculty.
For those who could not attend the event, you can find the video of the inauguration on the Faculty's YouTube channel. The dialogue between Helena Cruz and Oriol Nel·lo starts at minute 45.
