Animal Welfare Education Centre
AWEC was founded in 2019 by a team of veterinarians from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at UAB. The company has recognized expertise in research, consulting, and education in animal behavior and welfare across farm, companion, and wild animals.
AWEC offers education, consulting, research services, and innovative solutions aimed at enhancing animal welfare. Its work includes the development and validation of advanced sensors for monitoring animal well-being. One example is an acoustic sensor that analyses cattle vocalizations to detect coughing, pain, and stress (TRL7). Additionally, AWEC is developing solutions to monitor water consumption and to assess behaviours during critical production phases integrated into an AI digital platform.
These sensors are designed to detect health and behaviour problems at the earliest possible stage, enabling timely alerts for farmers and veterinarians. This proactive approach supports better animal welfare through prevention and prompt intervention.
