Official class professor Andrew Monnickendam
Professor Andrew Monnickendam taught his last official class.
On December 21, Professor Andrew Monnickendam gave his last official class for undergraduates, those taking the course Cultural Studies in Anglophone Countries. This autumn semester had been dedicated to food studies, the contemporary discipline that studies the relationship between food and human experience.
The class took the form of a fifty-question quiz that covered all the material that we had studied since September. There were questions on food production, distribution, inequality between the global north and south, “Columbussing”, menus, 3-d printers, sugar, packaging, supermarkets, and others. There were questions on societal issues, such as families, gender roles, LGBTQ families, on regional and national dishes, on pastoral societies, on humans and rats, sustainability, and others. There were questions on culture, on James Joyce, on Tolstoy, Norman Rockwell, and others.
Both students and staff participated and enjoyed this ludic event, as befits an activity held just before Christmas. The session concluded with delicious gifts given to both quiz champions and instructor. Learning and fun combined perfectly.
