Ana Maria Bojica (Universidad de Granada) will present her paper “The income model of new social ventures: A resource-dependence perspective,” along with Jairo A. Ruiz Nava (Tecnológico de Monterrey).

Abstract

This study integrates institutional logics and resource-dependence perspectives to analyze how the support alliances that new social ventures establish in the setup stage relate to the income model adopted for further organizational development. We address these questions in a sample of 111 Latin American social ventures that applied to a prestigious social entrepreneurship award, using a mixed-method study with a sequential design (qualitative-quantitative). The results show that new ventures' social mission and the diversity of support alliances used in the initial stage of venture creation have a positive and significant relationship with the choice of an income model that draws more on grants and sponsorship rather than on generating income through business activity. Moreover, the type of venture's mission moderates the link between alliance diversity and the type of income model. A higher diversity of support alliances used in the setup stage leads new ventures with a main social mission to adopt income models closer to those of classical NGOs. Conversely, for ventures with an environmental or triple-balance mission, this reduced dependence is associated with models based on income generated through business activity.
