Biological risk management
Risk is never zero.
The ultimate goal of biological risk control is to protect the health of workers and the general public, as well as to preserve the environment. Biosafety is a shared responsibility and requires the cooperation and commitment of everyone.
Key elements
Biological risk control is based on prevention and focuses on key elements such as:
- The identification of the biological agents, as the first step in biological risk control.
- Risk assessment which involves determining the probability and severity of health risks.
- The implementation of necessary control measures, which may include the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe work practices, adequate facilities and emergency protocols.
- Training for staff to understand the associated risks and control measures to follow.
- Monitoring and reviewing of biosafety procedures and practices should be regularly reviewed to ensure their effectiveness.
