Introduction
PI and/or facility supervisors must ensure that those working in the facility have the necessary training for the type of activity they are engaged in and to fulfil their responsibilities. Therefore, they must determine the initial general training that these persons must receive, in accordance with the biosafety training programme of the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and offer specific training on the risks inherent to the particular facilities and activities concerned. The compulsory level of training is proportional to the risk and to the person's experience, and in certain cases it may be required before starting work. No employees may be exempted from demonstrating their professional competence, irrespective of their status, experience or background.
