October 15 is Global Handwashing Day
Good hand washing technique is important to prevent the spread of germs. Think about everything you touch from the moment you wake up, come to work and come home.

Your hands may have come into contact with germs during your daily activities.
If you do research activities...
• Wash your hands after entering and before leaving the laboratory (rub well for 20 seconds).
• Before and immediately after handling microorganisms.
• Immediately after removing gloves in the laboratory.
Washing your hands with soap and water is the preferred method to prevent the spread of germs. When soap and water are not available, alcohol-based disinfectants can also be used. Alcohol-based sanitizers must contain at least 60% alcohol to be effective. However, hand sanitizers are not a substitute for hand washing.
You should know that hand washing...
• reduces the number of people suffering from diarrhea by 23-40%.
• reduces diarrheal diseases by 58% in people with a weakened immune system.
• reduces respiratory diseases, such as colds, in the general population by 16-21%.
