Medical emergencies
Percutaneous accident (small cuts, needlestick injuries, etc.)
- Remove the object that caused the accident.
- Induce bleeding for 2-3 minutes.
- Wash the wound with abundant soap and water.
- Disinfect with Cristalmina® or another disinfectant.
- Cover the wound with a waterproof dressing.
- Wash your hands with soap and water.
- Check that tetanus and hepatitis B vaccinations are up to date, especially if the contamination is caused by blood or biological fluids.
- Go to the Health Service (SAS) and inform the doctor of the cause of the injury and the agent involved.
- Register and report the accident.
Accidental ingestion of potentially biohazardous material.
- Transfer the affected person to the SAS after removing their protective clothing.
- DO NOT induce vomiting.
- Inform the doctor of the agent swallowed and follow their instructions.
- Register and report the accident.
Splash (eyes, nose, mouth or skin).
- Immediately wash all affected skin surface with soap and water or wash eyes, nose or mouth with plenty of water.
- Go to the SAS within 1 or 2 hours and provide all information on the type of fluid and the possibility or certainty of biological contamination.
- Record the accident.
Inhalation of bioaerosols
- Go to the SAS within one or two hours, providing information on the type of biological agent involved.
- Register and report the accident.
Spillage of biological agents (risk group 1 and 2) on the body
- Remove contaminated clothing and place it in an autoclave bag.
- Vigorously wash the exposed area with abundant soap and water.
- Seek medical attention (if necessary).
- Register and report the accident.
Spillage of biological agents (risk group 3) on the body
- Attend to the affected person.
- Remove their contaminated clothing and place it in an autoclave bag.
- Take the affected person out of the laboratory.
- Inform the supervisor and alert the laboratory staff to the need to evacuate.
- Close the doors of the affected area.
- Vigorously wash the exposed area with abundant soap and water for 1 minute.
- Call the SAS (1800/1900).
- Inform medical staff of the incident on arrival.
