Autoclave

The autoclave uses high-pressure steam to destroy microorganisms, and is one of the most reliable systems for neutralising biological waste and sterilising laboratory material and equipment.

Check the drain before switching on the autoclave and remove any debris. If the internal drain is blocked a layer of air can form at the bottom of the autoclave and prevent it from working correctly. The material to be decontaminated must be taken to the autoclave in closed, leak-proof containers.

Check the autoclave is working properly once a month, using biological indicators (spore, etc.), as the chemical method is not sufficient. Also necessary is the use of pressure and temperature recorders for each process and the implementation of a maintenance programme.
