Statistical models to analyse recurrent fragility fractures

Previous studies have shown that bone density loss increases with advancing age and fragility fractures are one of the consequences. As this type of fracture is caused by small mechanical forces rather than major trauma, the occurrence of recurrent fractures is common. However, future progression is not considered in most studies, which f ocus only on the initial event. 

This study aims to evaluate different recurrent event models to identify risk factors of fragility fractures.

Data were obtained from the EPIC study. A cohort of subjects aged 65-85 years between 2007 and 2017, was extracted from the Catalan Information System of Development of Research in Primary Care (SIDIAP). Prentice Williams Peterson stratified proportional hazards models were adjusted for the time between events. Cause specific PWP models were adjusted for the three gaps time, between data entry and first fracture, between first and second fracture and between second and third fracture. Proportional hazard as sumption was verified.

Bayesian spatio-temporal analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic in Catalonia

In this study, we modelled the incidence of COVID-19 cases and hospitalisations by basic health areas (ABS) in Catalonia. Spatial, temporal and spatio-temporal incidence trends were described using estimation methods that allow to borrow strength from neighbouring areas and time points. Specifically, we used Bayesian hierarchical spatio-temporal models estimated with Integrated Nested Laplace Approximation (INLA). An exploratory analysis was conducted to identify potential ABS factors associated with the incidence of cases and hospitalisations. High heterogeneity in cases and hospitalisation incidence was found between ABS and along the waves of the pandemic. Urban areas were found to have a higher incidence of COVID-19 cases and hospitalisations than rural areas, while socio-economic deprivation of the area was associated with a higher incidence of hospitalisations. In addition, full vaccination coverage in each ABS showed a protective effect on the risk of COVID-19 cases and hospitalisations.

Mètodes d’aprenentatge estadístic per a l’anàlisi de l’opinió pública

Una qüestió important en l’estudi dels grups humans és com una sèrie de factors diversos - com ara l’edat, el sexe o el lloc de naixement - poden estar associats amb l’opinió que té un  individu sobre afers públics. Aquest estudi tracta de respondre aquesta pregunta a Catalunya utilitzant mètodes d’aprenentatge estadístic de tipus no supervisat i supervisat. L’estudi s’ha dividit en dues parts: La primera part consisteix en la agrupació dels diferents individus de l’enquesta en grups, en funció de la seva opinió sobre afers de la vida pública. Per a fer-ho s’apliquen tècniques d’aprenentatge no supervisat, que primer redueixen la dimensionalitat del conjunt de dades i posteriorment agrupen els individus amb mètodes de clustering. La segona part del projecte consisteix en la creació de models d’aprenentatge supervisat que utilitzant variables de tipus sociodemogràfic tracten de predir a quin grup d’opinió pública pertanyeria un individu. Els resultats ens indiquen que es pot reduïr la dimensió de la base de dades d’opinió pública tanmateix conservant una gran part de la variabilitat. Pel què fa al clustering, ens indica l’existència de tres clústers d’opinió pública cada un dels quals mostra un comportament particular diferenciat dels altres dos. Per altre banda, s’aprecia a través de la capacitat predictiva dels models d’aprenentatge supervisat, una associació important entre l’opinió pública i les condicions sociodemogràfiques.

The awards ceremony was done on October 20th, 2023, on the occasion of the XXIII Dia de l'Estadística a Catalunya summoned by Societat Catalana d'Estadística and organized by Faculty of Economics and Business of the Universitat de Barcelona, where was announced the names of the winners and prizes and diplomas were delivered.
