The department

The Department of Animal Health and Anatomy (DSAA) is attached to and located at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). It is composed of two departmental units: the Animal Health unit and the Animal Anatomy unit.

The fundamental activities of the Department are:

  • Teaching: the DSAA programs and delivers teaching in the Veterinary Medecine and Food Science and Technology Bachelor's Degrees of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, in the subjects corresponding to the knowledge areas of animal health and anatomy and comparative pathological anatomy. The DSAA is also responsible for the coordination of International and Multidisciplinary University Masters, related to zoonoses and the One Health concept (MUZOH, IDOH+) and animal models of human diseases (MorphoPHEN). Finally, the department also participates in the studies of the Doctoral Program in Medicine and Animal Health that train the doctoral student to prepare the doctoral thesis.
  • Research: at the DSAA there are different research groups accredited by the Generalitat de Catalunya, which have active different lines of research funded - mostly by competitive Spanish state or international calls - that integrate various areas of anatomy, microbiology, parasitology , pathology and animal health in a broad sense. Part of the Department's research staff is also assigned to other research centers linked to the UAB (UAB Sphere), such as CReSA-IRTA and CBATEG.
  • Specialized professional services: the DSAA carries out an important social and professional function, due to the fact that it has different diagnostic services aimed at institutions, companies, individuals, etc. external to the UAB as centers of the UAB itself, mainly the Hospital Clínic Veterinari and the Farms and Experimental Fields Service, linked to the Faculty.
