Abstract:
This seminar has a very pretentious title. Its contents will be much more modest. The author will summarize research he has done in the last years, including the fitting of power-law distributions and related distributions, as well as applications to geoscience, epidemics, linguistics, music, and demography. Special attention will be paid to the so-called scaling property. It will also be shown how branching processes can account for some of these properties.
