Abstract:

Biological dosimetry relies on statistical methodologies to estimate radiation doses absorbed by individuals following accidental or therapeutic exposure. Central to this process is the assessment of various biomarkers' frequencies within blood cells, which serve as indicators of radiation-induced damage. Therefore, mathematical modelling in biodosimetry integrates biology, statistics, and advanced computational techniques to provide accurate and timely estimation of radiation dose in case of emergency. Complexity arises from the distinctive characteristics inherent to each biomarker. For instance, levels of gamma-H2AX change over post-radiation time, requiring three-dimensional models to capture dose-time dynamics. Partial body radiation, when only part of human body is exposed to radiation, leads to zero-inflated models. Incorporating these factors into mathematical models enhances the precision and reliability of dose estimation, crucial for optimizing treatment strategies following radiation exposure incidents.
