Background

The sustainability shift will require changes from all parts of industry. Some of these changes will be forced by national and international regulations, however it is still crucial to understand the economic motivation for firms to proactively engage in sustainability strategies. Arguably, all firms would like to emerge from the sustainability shift with increased competitive advantage. Hence, we ask the question to what extent can firms use sustainability strategies to build competitive advantage?

This talk will discuss the dominating theoretical perspectives, present a study with recent empirical evidence, and encourage a discussion on the research opportunities that lies in the academic discussion on the ‘sustainability strategy – firm performance relationship.’
