Margarita Arboix invested new Rector of the UAB

The event included speeches by Gabriel Masfurroll, President of the UAB Board of Trustees; Carles Escolà, Mayor of Cerdanyola del Vallès; Ferran Sancho, incumbent Rector of the UAB; and Margarita Arboix, new Rector of the UAB. The closing session was given by Jordi Baiget, Minister of Business and Knowledge of the Government of Catalonia.
Margarita Arboix earned her BSc in Biological Sciences from the University of Barcelona and her PhD in Biological Sciences from the UAB, where in 1976 she formed part of the Department of Pharmacology at the Faculty of Medicine. In 1985 she began to lecture in Veterinary Medicine.
She continued to conduct classes and research in pharmacology and became professor in 1993. Within the field of pharmacology, she has developed her research mainly in veterinary pharmacology (infectious and parasitic diseases) by co-directing the consolidated research group in Clinical and Therapeutic Parasitology (UAB and UB). In this sector, she also formed part of the European Committee of Veterinary Medicine of the European Medicines Agency (EMA, 1999-2006), was president of the European Group of Antimicrobial Resistances (EMA 2001-2004), member of the Panel on Additives in Animal Feed of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA 2003-2007) and member of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Food Safety Authority (AESAN, 2003-2008).
She is author of over 100 articles in journals and books. She has participated in over 40 publicly and privately funded research projects which have given way to several scientific papers and 15 doctoral theses. In 1995, she created the Drug Analysis Services which today forms part of the Technological Innovation Support Centres Network.
At the same time, at the UAB she has been vice-dean and dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, head of the Department of Pharmacology, Therapeutics and Toxicology, member of the university senate, president of the Board of Teaching and Research Staff (JPDI) and member of several committees. During these years she was also board member of the European Association of Faculties of Veterinary Medicine (1992-1995).
In October 2000, she became the assistant general manager of Veterinary Medicines at the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Health Products of the Ministry for Health and Consumption. In 2005, she became the director of the Territorial Health Services in Barcelona (Department of Health of the Government of Catalonia). In 2010, she returned to Madrid to become the Directorate General of Agricultural and Livestock Resources for the Ministry for Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs.
During these years, in which she conducted her professional activity in other public institutions, Dr Arboix continued to be linked to the UAB, giving classes in the degree of Veterinary Medicine and in master's degrees, as well as directing doctoral theses.
